Billy J’ai Faim

Shrimp Roll with sides of lobster bisque, coleslaw, and pommes dauphines

Verdict: Walk

Chef Billy's restaurant provides a mixed experience. Highlights include the lobster bisque and unique pommes dauphines, but hard for it to stand out in Montreal’s exceptional food scene. The Rum baba dessert impresses, and sustainability efforts make it worth a visit despite the coffee letdown.

Comments:

  • When anyone radiates as much as Chef Billy and his staff, you know he’s putting all his love into each of his creations. Such a quaint restaurant off the busy and lively St. Denis St.

  • The shrimp in the perfectly toasted roll was fresh. My combo came with pommes dauphines, a lobster bisque, and coleslaw. It being my first time having pommes dauphines, I wasn’t expecting the fluffy interior (I learned they’re deep-fried puffs made of a mashed potato choux mix). Their lobster bisque was my favourite of everything in the combo - great flavour without being overwhelming.

  • Couldn’t help but feel disappointed by the latte since Montreal has such an amazing cafe culture

  • The whole meal left me stuffed, I really had no choice but to take the Rum baba dessert to-go! I can’t sing enough praises about the vanilla Chantilly cream Chef made though. Fully expected to only have a taste when I got home later that day, but it never stood a chance…devoured.

  • Love their sustainability efforts with the glass containers for take-out with a deposit that’s refunded upon return. Lots of ready-to-eat options packaged this way
