Intro

Tucked away from Toronto’s busy streets, Conejo Negro offers a unique escape from the city’s hustle and bustle with unique flavours. Stepping onto the patio feels like entering an oasis, a retreat where the city’s chaos fades away. The custom graffiti-adorned corridor leading to the patio is reminiscent of Toronto’s iconic Graffiti Alley, adding a vibrant and artistic touch to the experience. It’s not just a dining space; it’s an ode to the city’s creative spirit and a testament to its artistic legacy. The fare served at Conejo Negro is based on the Americas going north to south: Creole, Carribean, and Latin American.

Ambiance

The newly created back patio is a delightful space, trimmed with greenery and comfortable seating. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a meal. The contrast between the bustling city outside and the calm ambiance of the patio is striking, making it feel like a hidden gem in the heart of Toronto.

Inside, the vibe shifts dramatically. The interior is cool, hip, and slightly dark, creating an atmosphere that feels almost magical. It’s like stepping into a realm of black magic, which is fitting given that the black rabbit symbolizes great luck and prosperity in magical lore. Conejo Negro, translating to Black Rabbit, seems to embrace this symbolism fully, with their motto “fertility & prosperity” subtly hinting at deeper meanings. Coincidence? I think not. The décor, with its dark hues and intriguing elements, perfectly complements the name and creates an enchanting dining environment.

The black rabbit theme is carried throughout the restaurant, from the artwork on the walls to the subtle touches in the decor. It’s an intriguing and somewhat mysterious ambiance that makes the dining experience even more special. The dim lighting adds to the atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for a romantic dinner or a meal with friends. The overall design is sophisticated yet inviting, encouraging diners to relax and enjoy their time.

The musical backdrop of old school R&B and hip hop enhances the experience, creating a lively yet relaxed vibe. It’s impossible not to feel some rhythm while you dine, adding an extra layer of enjoyment. The playlist seems carefully curated to not only entertain but also to evoke a sense of nostalgia. Music, in this setting, becomes more than background noise; it becomes a part of the feeling, enriching the overall dining experience.

Food

The menu at Conejo Negro is a unique fusion of Caribbean, Creole, and Latin American cuisines. This blend respects traditional flavours while introducing fresh, innovative twists that keep diners excited - an ode to Toronto’s multiculturalism and the beauty it creates when we come together. Each dish on the menu tells a story of cultural fusion, honouring the rich culinary traditions of these regions while pushing the boundaries of contemporary cuisine. The standout dish for me was the Blackened or charred Fish of the Day. It’s a complete meal, offering a delightful balance of crunch, freshness, and protein. The perfectly charred exterior combined with the tender, flavourful fish inside was a revelation.

Other must-tries include the Tuna & Shrimp Ceviche, Fried Chicken, and Banana Rum Cake. Each dish bursts with distinctive flavours and solid execution. The Tuna & Shrimp Ceviche was a refreshing, zesty delight that danced on the palate, while the Fried Chicken, with its crispy coating and juicy meat, was pure comfort food with a twist. The Banana Rum Cake, a perfect ending to the meal, was moist and rich, with the subtle warmth of rum enhancing the natural sweetness of the banana.
