Owakudani Valley or “Jigokudani" (the Valley of Hell)

Comments:

  • Found in Owakudani, or “Jigokudani" (aka the Valley of Hell) to the locals. Owakudani is an active volcano, home to a few hot springs and still spews sulphur fumes

  • These black eggs, or Kuro-Tamago, are fresh (chicken) eggs boiled in the sulfurous & iron-laden natural spring waters - which changes their shells to black!

  • It is said that eating this egg prolongs your life by 5-7 years

  • Be careful! They’re still piping hot - it was like playing hot potato at first.

  • Look for the cute black egg stools to sit and eat on!

  • Find these in the gift shop (Oowakudani Kurotamagokan, a store near Owakudani Station). There was quite a line-up but it does move quickly, especially if you have your cash ready.

  • Other snacks & treats that only look like the famous black eggs are available in the gift shop if eggs aren’t your thing
